Is that a gnome in your shower?

Attila, the Gnome Stool from Kartell, has solved a problem (while adding a ton of whimsy) for one of our designer clients, Claudia Cowperthwaite of Cowperthwaite Design.  Claudia had just designed a warm, modern shower of natural materials for a client, complete with steam shower, and needed a stool or bench so that they could relax and enjoy the steam.  Nothing seemed to fit the atmosphere, so Claudia did what we LOVE here at Threshold – she thought outside the box.  The “log” on top of the gnome brings out the warm color in the stone shower, while his green and red suit add a fantastic juxtaposition.

Local Artist Spotlight: Jeremy Earhart

Influenced in part by childhood nostalgia, album cover art and the ambient music of Brian Eno, Jeremy Earhart’s mixed media sculptures / design objects are rife with historical ornamentation. His work combines new materials with traditional methods of craft making.

“I use a combination of various images, and techniques to arrive at a visual balance and composition. Yet, there remains subjective pieces of a puzzle that each viewer can filter through their own experiences to generate meaning. I’m interested in relics, souvenirs, and fragments of memory distorting over time, giving parts of the narrative but not the whole story.”

Jeremy lived in Brooklyn for 12 years before transplanting to Austin in 2010. He has shown his work nationally and internationally, including a solo show in 2009 at Goff+Rosenthal Gallery in New York. Most recently, his installations were featured in the Scope Art Fair at Art Basel Miami. Jeremy received a BFA in painting/printmaking from Memphis College of Art and attended Parson School of Design.

Local Artist Spotlight: Caroline Wright

Caroline Wright is a painter, a cellist, and a native Austinite. Wright’s paintings are both exuberant and contemplative, merging aspects of music, movement, and landscape. With drippy acrylics and inks on surfaces as varied as rice paper, paper bags, and fabric, Wright uses painting to slow down connect to and the rhythm underlying life.

After graduating from Brown in 2004, Wright moved to Paris and lived with artists from all over the world in a squatted, abandoned state building in Belleville. This creative and challenging environment demanded a strong personal vision, and imprinted the possibility of a life supported by and for art-making. Wright returned to her hometown of Austin in 2006 and is represented by Martine Chaisson Gallery in New Orleans. Her paintings are in notable collections across Texas, including the Austonian and Lambert’s in Austin.

Local Artist Spotlight: Payam Sarabi

Sarabi Studio was established in 2007 by Payam Sarabi. Born and raised in Portland OR, a city known for its contemporary metropolitan architecture, Sarabi quickly developed a taste for clean lines and minimal design. First coming to Austin in 2004 with a very different calling, to head up a condo development in the vicinity of Hyde Park, Sarabi put down roots in Austin. After the successful completion of this project Payam turned his focus to his true passion, design. His work in the construction field gave him an appreciation for the beauty of raw materials coming to form. At first working with simple tools and a small welder he designed several minimal pieces that today are the foundation of the studios philosophy. With a focus on locally and responsibly sourced material, Sarabi Studio has grown over the past years to include a wide range of products all hand crafted in Austin, TX.

Local Artist Spotlight: Kevin Greer

As a child growing up in San Antonio, artist Kevin Greer was fascinated by the print and cursive writing he learned in school. His mother, an artisan who worked with stained glass and calligraphy, encouraged Greer in art classes at the McNay Museum.

This background, coupled with influence from other creative forms such as dance, fashion, and music, led to Greer’s acceptance at the prestigious Kansas City Art Institute, where he was the recipient of an Outstanding Artist Award. While studying with the Chair of the Painting Department and other distinguished faculty members, Greer focused on composition and was encouraged to paint from intuition and emotion.  Today, Kevin Greer works with mixed media to create abstract art. Greer thinks of his process like cooking: he recombines standard ingredients in innovative and surprising ways. Greer’s paintings offer vibrant energy to their surroundings.  Kevin Greer is based in Austin, Texas. In 2005, Tribeza magazine chose Greer as one of ten artists who are most influential upon the visual arts in Austin. His paintings are held in private collections in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Washington, DC, and London.

Local Artist Spotlight: Lisa Failla

Bolla Studio is an Austin-based company that specializes in unique contemporary pillow designs. Each pillow is designed by Lisa Failla, a trained Interior Designer with a degree from UT Austin, with the utmost attention to detail, material, construction and style.  Lisa is inspired by her extensive travels over the world and has named each pillow after one of her favorite cities. She experiments with proportion, color, texture, detail, and composition to create truly unique pieces and approaches the design of each pillow as a sculptural piece of art, with careful consideration to the three-dimensional aspect of the pillow..  All pillows are constructed by hand using only the highest quality materials including leather imported from Italy, 100% wool imported from Germany, as well as the finest silks, linens, and hardware available.

Local Artist Spotlight: Brian Allen-Aguilar

After feeling lost in his youth and dealing with losing both of his parents to cancer, spending time at a friend’s ranch lead Brian to his calling: woodworking.  As he worked up through the initial stages of his first few projects his vision began to become more clear and defined.  During the upheaval which was the result of taking care of his father he had learned to seek comfort and satisfaction in the things around him and he applied this to his work, resolving to continue to use reclaimed and salvaged materials from the local area.  Furthermore, one of his frustrations with traditional woodwork was that much of the products retained barely a trace of their previous lives and it was easy to forget that a piece of wood was ever part of a tree.  He became resolved to retaining “natural edges” whenever possible so that people would be reminded by looking at it where it came from.  Soon he began to research contemporary design and began to see the slick, smooth, and simple bases as a wonderful way to present the character and beauty of natural wood.  Brian is now a full time professional woodworker specializing in rustic and contemporary rustic, natural edge, solid hardwood tables and art made from locally salvaged and reclaimed materials.

Local Artist Spotlight: Derek Mizner

Derek Mizner is principal of Mizner Design, an owner-operated firm that focuses on residential and commercial architecture as well as furniture design/ fabrication and custom metalworking projects. Derek garnered much of his metalworking experience working with Lars Stanley (FAIA).  Previously, Derek worked in New York City with James Harb Architects after earning his Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University. A stint with the Peace Corps in Central America where Derek worked on urban planning projects gave him the perspective of the struggles and basic necessities for survival in underdeveloped countries.  Originally from Austin, Derek earned his undergraduate degree in Environmental Design from Texas A&M University.
